The Choir Director
The heart and soul of our music ministry at Christ Church is Choir Director Dr. Rene Schmidt. His heart, hands and mind are dedicated to raising a truly “joyful noise” unto the Lord!
Rene was appointed to serve as the Choir Director at Christ Church in 1976 by Father Harrison Lee, III. Since that time Rene has become a sheet anchor for the historic venue that is Christ Church.
Dr. Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in music from Luther College located in Decorah, IA, recognized nationally for its exceptional music department. Rene also holds a Master of Music Degree from Southern Methodist University and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of North Texas.
The Church Organ
Christ Church’s music ministry revolves around the organ located in the Church Nave. The organ is a mechanical action tracker organ constructed for the Church in 1973 by Rudolph Janke of German fame. The organ is a classic example of the type associated with 17th and 18th century German baroque organs and represents the organ reform movement that swept the United States in the late 20th century.
The 10:00 a.m. Choir
A small but highly talented group of dedicated singers make up the 10:00 choir which sings in English. Musical selections include classical, traditional music of the Church, including works by masters such as Thomas Tallis, Giovanni Anerio, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastian Bach. The choir sings in full four part harmony and is often accompanied by the flute of accomplished flutist Dr. Lee Lattimore. Ms. Pat Crenshaw, regionally famous musical director also provides direction and support to the choir.
The 12:30 p.m. Choir
The Spanish service choir delights in filling the Christ Church nave with the sounds of love for Jesus. A small but dedicated and enthusiastic group, the 12:30 p.m. choir is led by the organ playing of Dr. Schmidt. The choir sings traditional selections from El Himnario. This book of Christian celebration was the result of an Ecumenical project. The Episcopal Church USA, the Presbyterian Church USA and the United Church of Christ collaborated together to chose the selections for this well know hymnal used by Spanish speaking congregations across the country. It contains a wide variety of Christian hymns whose notes and words are known to millions.
